Fighting social evils through street theatre in jail

CHANDIGARH: Street theatre has been playing a significant role in spreading awareness, over the years. After the city, now it is moving towards jails to spread awareness on issues ranging from sex education to social issues like corruption and terrorist attacks. City based theatre groups have been coming forward to spread awareness among prisoners by street plays.
According to theatre experts, there is perhaps no better way to get a message across to the people, more effectively, than a street play. For, it is staged right in the middle of people and not on an elevated podium, creating distance between the performers and audience. Even better, it could be staged at the shortest of notice, without the paraphernalia associated with organized plays staged at preconceived venues.
